Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis

Many people believe that habitually cracking your knuckles wears down the joints and leads to arthritis later in life. The popping sound comes from gas bubbles bursting in the fluid that lubricates the joints. Researchers have compared arthritis rates in people who often crack their knuckles with people who don't.

Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis

A study of 300 people over 50 found no difference in arthritis rates between habitual knuckle-crackers and non-crackers. Dr. Donald Unger famously cracked knuckles on only one hand for 60 years and found no difference between his hands (he won an Ig Nobel Prize for it). The popping sound is just gas bubbles collapsing in joint fluid.
